The session offers practical insights into designing and planning teaching and learning strategies tailored to the international educational context in China. Participants will learn how to relate learning objectives to conceptual understandings to promote deep learning and will apply the principles of backward design to plan effective lesson units.

Participants will examine the deep connection between language and cultures, and how understanding cultural contexts can enhance students communication skills. They will also take away practical ways to foster critical thinking, promote global awareness, and encourage cross-cultural dialogue in Chinese classroom. This will help students not only master language skills but also navigate a complex, interconnected world with confidence and respect for cultural diversity.
About our speakers
Dr. Zhou Jiaxian
Dr. Zhou Jiaxian is a professor and researcher in the Department of Educational Psychology at East China Normal University and Zhejiang Normal University. She serves as Founder of Center for Educational Neuroscience of ECNU and Vice President of the Learning Sciences Division of the Chinese Higher Education Society. Since 2013, she has held editorial roles at the Journal of Educational Biology. She was a senior research advisor for UNESCO's IBE in 2017 and an executive board member of IMBES (2011-2015). Since 2024, she has been an expert advisor for UNESCO's Global Future Education Design Competition.
Grace Zeng
Grace has been the driving force behind the highly successful EY-12 Chinese Language and Culture program in International school of Beijing for over a decade. A certified educator with principal qualifications in both the U.S. and Canada, she brings extensive experience across diverse primary and secondary education settings. With a deep commitment to excellence in multilingual learning, Grace specializes in designing and aligning Chinese curricula with evolving standards and international frameworks. As a visionary leader, she is passionate about fostering high-quality instruction, empowering teachers, and promoting intercultural understanding. Dedicated to continuous professional growth, she champions teacher agency as a catalyst for innovation and transformative impact in language education.
Jessica Shan
Jessica holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and a Certificate in School Management and Leadership (CSML) from Harvard University. She has taught Chinese language and literature for many years and serves as a Cambridge A-Level and IBDP examiner. Jessica specializes in curriculum development, brain-based learning, culturally responsive instruction, intercultural communication, and technology-enhanced pedagogy. She is actively engaged in coaching, consulting, and teacher training in international school community.
Mophly Li
Mophly Li holds a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature, a Master of Education, and TESOL qualifications. She currently serves as the Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning Specialist at Beijing City International School, where she specializes in aligning the Chinese national curriculum with international frameworks. With nine years of experience in curriculum design and reform, Mophly has co-designed integrated curricula and led curriculum articulation for IB schools in China. She is passionate about translating research into future-focused pedagogy and sharing practical insights with educators.
Penny Ma
Penny Ma has been working at international schools in Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Beijing as a homeroom teacher, language specialist, and innovation coach. As an Apple Professional Learning Specialist and certified Google Innovator, she is passionate about creating authentic learning experience to inspire every kind of mind. Currently, she is a dual language enrichment teacher at International School of Beijing.
